Fabulous Pair of Secessionist Silver Vases

19th century
Description

This is a wonderful pair of Victorian silver-plated vases in the Secessionist style.

They are tall and impressive, whilst being elegant in appearance. The glass is etched and the vertical lines lend more height. The bases feature a variety of decorative elements, including Greek keys, and stand on three sphinxes. There are patches where the silver plate has been rubbed away but these do not detract from the overall appearance.

There is some damage. One of the glass vases has lost about one centimetre of height from its base, which has been smoothed, and one of the stands has lost the bottom element to two of the hanging decorations. The vases are priced accordingly.

Dimensions:

Height: 31cm

Diameter of Bases: 10cm.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vienna Secessionist design favours geometric forms, linear ornamentation, and stylized motifs over lush floral curves, often combining silver or plated metal mounts with clear glass liners.

These decorative pieces typically feature blown or etched clear glass set into cast or stamped metal mounts made of solid silver, electroplated silver, or Britannia metal.

Authentic items frequently showcase maker marks or silver purity stamps near the base, accompanied by hand-etched geometric glass details and period-appropriate assembly methods.

Position the pair symmetrically on a dining table centre, sideboard, or mantelpiece to allow light to filter through the etched glass and highlight the polished silver mounts.

Wash glass liners gently using warm water and mild liquid soap, and polish the metal framework using a soft microfibre cloth with a non-abrasive silver cream.
