Pair of Antique English Georgian Brass Candlesticks ~ J.t.& Co

19th century
Description

A very fine Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Brass Candlesticks by J.T. & Co , the one marked on the underside of its base, both retaining their internal wire push-ejectors and brass buttons. cf. Roderick Butler ~ "A Study Collection of Marked Domestic Brass and other Base Metalware c.1600-c.1900", published in 2001. The J.T.& Co. mark is there discussed on page 88, where Butler states that although not certain, it seems probable that the mark is that of John Turner & Co of Birmingham. listed in the Birmingham 'Wrightson' directories of 1818 and 1823. Very few antique brass candlesticks bear Maker's marks, thus making this pair of documentary interest.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian brass candlesticks typically feature baluster, knopped, or column stems resting on square, circular, or octagonal bases. Produced during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these pieces were cast in sections and assembled, reflecting classic Georgian proportions and craftsmanship.

Traditional brass candlesticks were cast using sand moulds, often created in two vertical halves and joined together with hard solder. Stems were finished on a lathe, and older examples often contain internal push-up ejector mechanisms to raise burnt candle ends.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-finishing, such as subtle lathe marks, seam lines from two-part casting, or minor irregularities in symmetry. The weight is typically substantial due to solid brass composition, and the underside of the base may reveal seam joins or hand-cut threads.

Displaying a pair on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard introduces warm metallic accents and structured symmetry to contemporary spaces. They pair effectively with natural linen, dark wood surfaces, or modern ceramics to create balanced visual contrast.

To maintain antique brass, wipe regularly with a soft dry cloth to remove dust and surface residues. Microcrystalline wax can be applied to protect against oxidisation, while mild brass polishes should be used sparingly if maintaining a high shine is preferred.
