Engraved ‘Gorge’ Cased Striking French Carriage Clock, by Soldano

19th century
Description

A good late 19th century engraved ‘Gorge’ cased French striking brass Carriage Clock, by Joseph Soldano. Serial number 2761 retaining its original key.

The 8-day movement retains its original signed platform lever escapement and strikes hours and half-hours on a coiled-gong.

The case is beautifully engraved with scrolls and acanthus leaves, with further geometric patterns around the upper rim. The handle also has etched decoration. The circular enamel dial with its roman numerals and blued steel moon hands is surrounded by an engine-turned brass mask. The bevelled glass to all five sides (including top) is undamaged.

Dimensions:  Height (handle up): 17 cm. Width: 9 cm. Depth: 8 cm.

MAKER:   Signed “JS” and “Soldano” under the silvered lever platform escapement. Joseph Soldano was  known as a maker of fine quality carriage clocks having been awarded medals at the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 & 1878, where it was noted that Soldano "had achieved substantial progress in the art of case decoration." This clock is a good example of that work.

In full working order. Guaranteed for 12 months.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
