G.w.r Fusee Wall Clock of Historical Importance, Provenance

Clockwise is privileged to present to you a fine example of a rare early 20th century mahogany cased G.W.R dial wall clock with an eight day wire-driven fusee movement, along with documented proof of sale of this clock from British Railways Western region in 1973 to the third Earl of Bewdley - Arthur Baldwin - the son of Stanley Baldwin, former UK Prime Minsiter. The original ivorine plaque is present to the side of the case and this number is also present on the case inner and rear of the iron dial. This clock comes from the estate of Edward Baldwin, grandson of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, and the fourth Earl of Bewdley. Stanley Baldwin was from an extraordinary family: Rudyard Kipling was his first cousin, Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter were both uncles, his mother Louisa was a novelist, and her siblings included the famous Macdonald sisters. Edward Baldwin was committed to rehabilitating his grandfather's reputation and, being an only child, spent much of his life as sole custodian of these family portraits and personal objects, dating mainly from the late Victorian era. Arthur Baldwin was a director of G.W.R between the war years, a pilot during World War II and an author.

The twelve inch iron dial has been restored some years ago and shows signs of wear but more imperfections in the flat surface than paint loss, in fact the paint element of the dial is lovely and vivid and complimented by the original blued hands. The quality English movement has shaped shoulders to the plates and is in lovely condition having just benefitted from a service. The case surround is of traditional eight piece construction and held onto the back box by four tapered pegs with a GWR numberplate fixed to the left side of the case. The back box is a conventional early 20th century design with one side door to the right and a bottom door with the lock removed and secured by a ball bearing catch which was a common feature on GWR clocks having been carried out by the GWR clock workshops in Reading .

This clock hails from the station at Radyr, Cardiff and was in use there from 1926 until 1973.

This is a truly unique clock having belonged to an important member of British society and with its provenance through the documentation. Added to this is the excellent condition of this rare piece which makes this clock an important item of historical interest.
