A Pair of George IV Mahogany Pedestal Cupboards

Description

A pair of George IV mahogany pedestal cupboards, each with a plain top over full length cupboard doors with a bold applied pilaster in the Retour d’Egypte manner, with plain outswept capital over a row of carved stylised leaves and a tapering shaft, to a similar foot and on a plain plinth base. One fitted with a cellaret drawer with a gilt brass handle, the other with open slides, and each with a side lock, keys supplied.

Condition: On the whole very good, both pedestals are in good condition with excellent use of flame mahogany on the doors, both locks work and the drawer and slides run smoothly. The pair have a bold appearance, good colour and nice patina.

George IV furniture, spanning 1820 to 1830, marks the transition between classical Regency styling and early Victorian heavy ornamentation. Pieces from this decade frequently feature flame mahogany veneers, classical architectural motifs, bold plinth bases, and intricate carved mouldings.
