Pair of Antique English Georgian Telescopic Brass Candlesticks

19th century
Description

A scarce Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Telescopic Brass Candlesticks, in good original condition, each stick retaining it's wire candle stub ejector complete with brass button. Extended simply by drawing up the inner columns, the one stick is completely firm while it's companion is a little looser, requiring a light twist to prevent its slipping down. More decorative than utilitarian therefore, but fine examples of what today are extremely difficult period accessories to source.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Rough sand-cast hollow bases: metal cast in sand moulds before mass production.
Internal wire push-rods with brass buttons: original mechanical ejectors to clear spent candles.
Deeply oxidised undersides with old grime: undisturbed metal beneath regular polishing.
Fine lathe-turning lines across the mouldings: hand-guided finishing on the brass.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

These 19th-century Georgian brass candlesticks present a polished gold finish and rest upon stepped rectangular bases. Each piece includes turned mouldings along the telescopic columns and a flared sconce at the top. The smooth metal surfaces reflect light, showing minor handling marks consistent with genuine age and original use. One stick holds its position firmly, while the companion column requires a light twist to stay elevated. The pair measures 19 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Positioned on a mantelpiece, these items add traditional character and warmth to a sitting room or dining area. They serve as decorative accessories that reflect period craftsmanship without requiring active utility. The simple mechanics and clean geometric lines integrate smoothly into classic or transitional interior schemes. Collectors appreciate such pieces for their distinct period details and preserved functionality.

Telescopic candlesticks were introduced during the late Georgian period, featuring an adjustable column mechanism that allows the height of the candle holder to be raised or lowered for adjustable lighting levels.

These lighting accessories were typically cast in solid brass, featuring turned column sections, sliding internal mechanisms, and weighted bases to maintain balance when fully extended.

Authentic Georgian examples typically feature visible seam lines from two-part hand casting, internal friction slides or ejector mechanisms, hand-turned collar mouldings, and age-appropriate surface wear.

Positioning a pair of brass candlesticks symmetrically along a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard adds warm metal accents and architectural structure to modern and period spaces.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive metal cleaner to remove surface oxidisation, taking care to avoid harsh chemicals that could affect mechanical elements or historical surface patina.
