This clear lead glass serving bottle originates from the late Georgian period and functions as a decanter for dining table use. The vessel exhibits a colourless transparent finish, featuring a fluted neck, an applied neck ring, and detailed hand-engraved grape vine motifs decorating the main body. The piece stands at 25.5 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, possessing a balanced cylindrical silhouette designed for pouring. Historically employed by servants to replenish glasses at dinner parties, the bottle integrates smoothly into contemporary interior settings. It suits placement upon a sideboard top or dining room display cabinet as a functional decorative accessory. The clear glass construction reflects ambient light, showcasing the delicate floral and botanical carvings etched onto the lower section. Maintenance involves simple hand washing to preserve the polished exterior surface and intricate engraved details.

FAQs

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using mild dish soap and a soft cloth, avoiding extreme temperature shifts that could shock the glass. Ensure internal moisture is thoroughly dried to prevent mineral deposits or clouding over time.

Place the bottle on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or windowsill where natural light can pass through the glass, accentuating the engraved surface details and form alongside complementary glassware.

Authentic pieces often exhibit a polished or rough pontil mark on the underside of the base, subtle variations in glass thickness, a slight greyish or dark cast characteristic of early lead glass, and faint operational wear on the base perimeter.

These bottles were typically crafted from hand-blown lead crystal or flint glass. Craftsmen added decorative elements using copper-wheel engraving to cut detailed leaf, fruit, or heraldic designs directly into the glass surface.

Georgian serving bottles were handheld glass vessels produced during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in Britain, used primarily for decanting and serving spirits, wine, or ale at the dining table.
