Georgian glassware, produced during the reigns of George I to George IV (1714 to 1830), is characterised by heavy lead-metal content, distinct optical effects, and various stem formations such as plain, air twist, opaque twist, and knopped variations.

These vessels were predominantly handmade using lead crystal, which gave the glass a heavier weight, high refractive index, and a resonant ring when tapped. They were crafted using free-blowing techniques and applied tooling before the introduction of widespread mould-pressing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit surface wear known as age cracks or scratches on the foot rim, a rough pontil mark on the underside where the glass was snapped from the blowing iron, and bubbles or striations within the metal itself.

Positioning historical stemware within modern settings adds tactile contrast; they can be displayed inside lighted glass cabinets, utilised as single-stem floral vases on side tables, or incorporated into a refined tablescape.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or sudden temperature shifts to prevent thermal shock and structural damage.
