Description

Wonderful 16th-century oak court cupboard, very original condition and colour.

Please take a look at the pictures and you will see the quality of this lovely piece of north English probably North Yorkshire or Northumberland. Circa 1580/1600.

From my research, it was in a Scottish castle that was demolished in the 1950s.

It was sold by auction in the 1950s and remained in the same family for many years before coming to auction again in the early 2000s.

Made from English oak, the tree would be about 300 years old when downed to make furniture, meaning the wood is about 800 years old.

This is a very heavy and strong piece of furniture.

6 feet 2 inches wide.

5 feet 8 inches tall.

2 feet deep.

This Elizabethan court cupboard dates from the period circa 1580/1600 and measures 188 cm wide, 173 cm tall, and 61 cm deep. Constructed from dark brown English oak, the heavy and strong timber displays a deep natural patina and original colour. The upper section contains two panelled doors flanking a central panel, beneath a carved foliate frieze and above two long drawers with small metal pull knobs. The lower stage features two large cupboard doors decorated with geometric panels, separated by a central stile with carved foliage. Bulbous turned columns flank the upper stage, matching the carved detailing visible on the vertical stiles and drawer fronts. In a contemporary home, this large storage piece suits a formal dining room, hallway, or spacious living area as a traditional statement sideboard or display cabinet.
