Period Oak Court Cupboard Circa 1580/1600

16th century
For Sale by Cavers Antiques
Description

Wonderful 16th-century oak court cupboard, very original condition and colour.

Please take a look at the pictures and you will see the quality of this lovely piece of north English probably North Yorkshire or Northumberland. Circa 1580/1600.

Please ask any questions you may have.

From my research, it was in a Scottish castle that was demolished in the 1950s.

It was sold by auction in the 1950s and remained in the same family for many years before coming to auction again in the early 2000s.

Made from English oak, the tree would be about 300 years old when downed to make furniture, meaning the wood is about 800 years old.

This is a very heavy and strong piece of furniture.

6 feet 2 inches wide.

5 feet 8 inches tall.

2 feet deep.

Declaration

Cavers Antiques has dated this Elizabethan Carved Oak Court Cupboard to the 16th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The court cupboard emerged in England during the late 16th century in the Elizabethan era, serving as a prominent storage unit and display cabinet in dining halls.

These cabinets were constructed using solid English oak joined with wooden pegs and mortise and tenon joints, featuring hand-carved relief decoration and turned wooden columns.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-hewn oak timber, pegged construction, irregular wear around handles and bases, and deep patination accumulated over centuries.

Position the piece as a statement focal point in a hallway, dining room, or living space, balancing its visual weight against neutral walls and simple decorative accents.

Maintain the finish by applying natural beeswax paste once or twice annually, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp conditions.
