An Early Cuckoo Clock in the Manner of Beha

19th century
Description

A good early Cuckoo clock with wooden plates in the manner of a Beha - made in the Black Forest in a Biedermeier cherry wood case with original paint work, made in circa 1850. The pediment is centred on a door which opens to reveal an articulated painted cuckoo bird with opening beak.

The thirty hour weight driven wooden frame movement with original weights and bellows, still retains its original paper on the back. the beautiful

This is a very rare pleasantly plane and understated light colour model. The unusual case model is not documented in the Beha book but the structure of the movement, weights, bellows and other aspects of the clock are identical to other more common models that are well documented as being by Johan Baptist Beha, whose prodigious output was not always labelled.
