An English Rococo Style Mantel Clock with Fusee Movement and an Ormolu Case, by John Peterkin. Circa 1820

19th century
Description

This is a small and attractive Regency period mantel timepiece in excellent condition.

The eight day duration, single chain fusee circular movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and the backplate signed "John Peterkin, London". Having a pendulum holdfast knob and the pendulum having micrometer regulation and a thick, lozenge shaped brass bob.

Behind a 2 3/4" diameter gilded dial with applied black Roman numerals, minute divisions, an engine turned centre, finely cast ornate bezel and 'open moon' steel hands.

Contained in a good, cast brass Rococo style case of small size with it's original mercurial, highlighted matt 'fire gilding'. The classical floral Rococo shape with a flowing finial to the top, curved acanthus leaves following the edges, decorated sides with floral and lattice design, acanthus dial surround and four scrolled feet. In turn, fixed to a pleasing matching and splayed base which is further, stood upon a rectangular moulded, water gilded wooden base.

This is an attractive little clock of high quality and the ornate design follows onto the back of the case. The original gilding is in very good condition with highlighted areas that 'glint' in the light. The photographs cannot accurately demonstrate the colour and appearance and the wooden base has worn to show the attractive under-colour of the bole used in water gilding. It is rare to find examples with their base and in such good condition and the smaller size of this piece adds to its appearance. It can be placed on or off its base as a matter of preference.

The maker, John Peterkin is listed as working from 1811 until 1840 from 25, Cleveland Street, London.

The purchased item can be collected at a time mutually agreed or if required, delivery can be arranged for which we are happy to provide a quotation.
