Georgian Balloon Style, Mahogany Table Clock by Henry Harris of London. Circa 1800

19th century
Description

This is a very handsome and well-proportioned bracket clock of good quality.

Eight day duration, double fusee, with five knopped pillars, Anchor Recoil escapement, rack and star-wheel striking the hours on a rear-mounted bell, long pendulum with top micrometer regulation and circular plates that fill the top section of the case. Also, a sprung and easy to use pendulum holdfast (for transportation) fixed to the case bottom. The backplate has a uniformly engraved, symmetrical border pattern which is repeated around a central cartouche bearing the maker's name "Henry Harris" (of) "LONDON". The fixing brackets, hammer cock and backcock are also similarly engraved.

The eight inch diameter, circular and bowed, painted iron dial has retained its original base paint and though faint, most of its original writing of the numerals etc. It has a fine minute track and Roman hour numerals and the upper portion carries the maker's name. The fine, gilded brass hands are extremely well-executed being fully engraved with a wheat-ear design. The dial sits within a separate lipped brass ring and the locking cast brass bezel has a Sheraton style, concave edge and a bowed glass.

Mahogany 'Balloon' shaped with an elaborated top. It is surmounted with a cast brass ball-on-stand finial upon the stopped, Cavetto sided pyramid. This is mounted on a square plinth that has cloth-backed, brass, fish scale frets to three sides. This in turn is mounted upon the rounded top of the waisted case. The front has a conforming panel below the dial of flame veneer that is edged with boxwood stringing. The rear of the case has a full-size, waisted and locking, glazed door and the case has a plinth with a moulded to edge and this sits upon four brass, ball-and-plate feet.

Henry Harris is listed as working from Curtain Road, London from1799 until 1825.

This lovely clock is original and working but needing an overhaul to the movement and a rear lock.
