Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Italian Renaissance Revival standard lamp dates from circa 1920 and stands 178 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. The piece is constructed from carved wood with a gilded gesso finish in a rich gold tone, complemented by cut moquette fabric on the turned column featuring a yellow background with soft pink and white floral motifs. Elaborate decorative details include acanthus leaf carvings on the circular base and upper capital, beaded mouldings, and a fluted column shaft terminating in a faux candle socket at the top. The electrical wiring is updated and tested, and the lamp retains an integrated plug and twisted cord. In a modern home, this standard lamp suits placement in an empty corner of a living room, bedroom, or study to provide ambient lighting alongside a matching shade. The classical Italian design and gilded details integrate well with traditional or eclectic interior schemes, adding height and texture to the room. The sturdy circular base ensures stability on the floor, while the rewired electrical components allow for safe daily operation.

FAQs

An Italian giltwood standard lamp is a freestanding floor light originating from Italy, typically featuring hand-carved wood decorated with gold leaf. Popular throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these pieces draw design inspiration from Renaissance and Baroque architectural motifs.

These lamps are constructed primarily from carved softwoods or hardwoods, which are layered with gesso base coats and finished with thin sheets of applied gold leaf. Decorative shaft sections may also feature applied textiles or painted detailing alongside metallic electrical components.

Authentic pieces display subtle wear to the gilding, showing the underlying red or yellow bole clay through high points of the carving. Hand-carved joinery, minor natural wood shrinkage, and historical wiring conversions also indicate genuine age.

Position a gilded standard lamp in an unutilised corner or alongside a contemporary armchair to create a focal point. Combining classical ornate gold finishes with neutral modern upholstery creates a balanced, layered interior aesthetic.

Dust the carved surfaces regularly using a soft, dry feather duster or dry camel-hair brush to prevent dust build-up. Avoid using liquid polishes, water, or chemical cleaners, as these can soften the gesso base and strip fragile gold leaf.
