Description

A fine quality mahogany 8 day longcase clock by James Ritchie of Edinburgh, circa 1825.

The beautifully proportioned mahogany veneered case of typical drumhead design with flame veneers to the trunk door flanked by reeded quarter columns. The base with a raised single moulding and shaped bracket feet. The hood with locking glazed concave brass bezel, drum shaped. Turned horizontal supports with reeded paterae.

The circular silvered brass dial finely engraved with bold Roman numerals and an outer minute circle.

Subsidiary date and seconds zone to the dial centre, signed to the centre James Ritchie Edinburgh.

The high quality movement is of eight day duration, the shaped plates united by four knopped pillars, anchor escapement and striking the hours on a single bell.

James Ritchie was apprenticed to James Howden on Parliament square around 1799 and was listed in a marriage record of 1804 as being a watchmaker & Jeweller. James Ritchie opened for business in 1809 at 29 Leith Street. In 1809 he took over Joseph Durward's clockmaking firm which had been established in 1775. 1814: James was made a Burgess of the City of Edinburgh and the business flourished.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
