Merchant House Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The marquetry and parquetry inlay to the door and base; the reeded hood columns with Corinthian capitals, and the use of ebonised moulding to the trunk corners and base panels are all pleasing features. As is the wavy shaped hood door and matching back splats so typical of clocks from the West Country in general, and the Bristol area in particular. The height is 83½ inches.
The movement is of eight day duration with rack striking sounding the hours on a bell. It has been fully overhauled, regulated and is covered by a 12 month guarantee.
The time is displayed via the original matching brass hands to the delightful painted dial from the shortlived Birmingham dialmakers firm of Wilkes & Baker. The age of the moon is shown in the arch, the rosy-cheeked moons rolling away to reveal a shipping scene to one side and a rural scene to the other. A subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and the signature "Cuff - Shepton Mallett" complete a most charming dial.
The condition is exemplary. Restoration is limited to the bracket feet and old repairs are evident to the hood. An agreeable and very honest clock.
