Large Fine Repeat Strike Carriage Clock

19th century
Sold by Clockwise
Description

This is an impressive and rare example of a large repeater carriage clock striking on a gong, serial number 2994, within a pillared stepped case, circa 1875, made by Dumas of France and stamped 675 to the baseplate. This excellent example has an unmarked enamel dial with five minute outer markers and original hands. The overhauled movement is of eight day duration mechanism striking the 1/2 hours and hours on a gong with the original lever escapement. The last photo shows the size of this lovely clock compared to a standard carriage clock. The height dimension below is with the handle up and the last photo is of this impressive piece next to a standard carriage clock of the period..

Dumas was an exceptional maker not only of movements but the cases and gong blocks too. The base of the case bears a trademark A D within a diamond, the trademark of clockmaker A. Dumas who worked at 44, Rue Bonaparte in Paris, and probably Saint-Nicolas d’Aliermont. He is known for making carriage clocks with porcelain panels. The Revue Chronométrique, June 1880 p.89, Vol. XI says that Dumas specialises in mignonettes which he makes very well. [see Carriage Clocks, Their History and Development, by Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert]

All my clocks come with my two year guarantee as standard.

Rather than trusting a courier of any sort I unreservedly recommend collection or I can deliver regionally/nationally. All antique clocks require delicate handling and specific setting up so it is far better for a dealer to meet a client and talk them through the process, or set the clock up for them, rather than leave the client struggling at the other end on their own.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
