Late C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze tripod Athenienne with glass amphora , after the antique.
Cast verdigris bronze lion monopodia tripod Athenienne stand signed on the base by “Sommer, Napoli” . The base of concave-sided form , the shaped monopodia supports with paw feet and an elaborate pierced bracket to the inside shoulder . The base with a scripted incised foundry mark .
The removable twin-handled tapering ‘aquamarine’ glass amphora of ancient Roman form , the surface having been artificially aged and worn . The glass vessel held in position by a decorative interlaced cast circular ring .
Probably a copy of an excavated antique Pompeiian artifact , the Neapolitan bronze foundry of Sommer having been renowned reproducers of antique objects from the Italian museum collections for sale as souvenirs and momentoes of academic interest to tourists completing the classical Grand Tour of Europe.
In excellent original condition .
