19th Century Ormolu and Painted-porcelain Striking 8-Day Mantel Clock

19th century
Description

A good late 19th century Ormolu and painted porcelain panelled Mantel Clock by makers Wassell and Halford of 43 Fenchurch Street, London.

The heavy gilt brass base supports hand-painted porcelain panels on three sides, two of which are curved and the painted dail. The subject for the painting framed in turquiose is a mixture of Cherubs, flowers, sheet music and musical instruments. There are two pineapple finials to the top, either side of a raised urn shaped two-handled  topper (also painted, with flowers and a bird).

The 8-day movement strikes hours and half hours on a bell. The dial is exquisitely hand-painted with roman numerals, gold painted scrolls and gilt edging. There are gold-painted 5-minute and minute markers around the chapter ring and it retains its original spade hands.

It is signed below the XII 'Wassell and Halford'. The address also appears, between the winding posts in the centre of the dial, above the VI.

Complete with key.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
