An early and rare mid-19th century French CARRIAGE CLOCK by Paul Garnier. The multi-piece case, which retains its original gilding, features the iconic ‘Garnier’ hinged handle, with glazed front and back ‘doors’ which slide upwards for access to wind the clock etc.
The eight-day movement retains its original early lever escapement and strikes hours and half-hours via an outside countwheel. There is a separate (third) alarm train, whilst the engine-engraved and silvered dial features four winding ‘squares’ and three original blued steel hands, one of which is for setting the alarm. Perfect working order and includes its original outer leather travelling case, which although remarkable that it still exists, it is in a somewhat ‘distressed’ condition. Perfect working order. 6ins high; 4ins wide.
** Paul Garnier (1801-1869) was an accomplished and inventive clockmaker who was a founder member of the Société de Horologiers. His role in the development of the French Carriage Clock was only really discovered after research in the 1970’s.
