Fine Strut Clock by Thomas Cole

19th century
Description

An iconic and typically fine quality gilt STRUT CLOCK by the famous maker Thomas Cole.* In original condition and in perfect working order this timepiece has all the ‘hallmarks’ of a Thomas Cole Strut Clock, with its upper hinged handle; profusely engraved silvered dial; blued steel hands; hinged support ‘easel’ to be back; sliding window to observe (and adjust if necessary) the original lever escapement and the hinged permanently fixed winding key. It is numbered underneath the case: 1091. Highly recommended. circa 1855-60

* Thomas Cole was born in Somerset in 1800, moved to London in 1820, and started working independently around 1838. By 1845 Cole was calling himself a ‘designer and maker of ornamental clocks’ and exhibited as such at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Crystal Palace. He died of typhoid fever on 3rd January 1864.

** In July 2006 a Strut Clock by Thomas Cole numbered 973 and dated 1852 was sold at Christies. It was described as possibly his earliest Strut Clock. Thus it may be deduced that this example can be dated within the following very few years ~ certainly no later than 1860.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
