By 1845 Cole was calling himself a ‘designer and maker of ornamental clocks’ and exhibited as such at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Crystal Palace. He died of typhoid fever on 3rd January 1864.

In July 2006 a Strut Clock by Thomas Cole numbered 973 and dated 1852 was sold at Christies. It was described as possibly his earliest Strut Clock. Thus it may be deduced that this example can be dated within the following very few years ~ certainly no later than 1860.
