Edwardian. James Dixon & Sons Sterling Silver Pierced Centrepiece 1907

1900 - 1920
Description

A top quality centrepiece by the creme de la creme of English silver manufacturers, James Dixon & Sons

This looks quite stunning once filled with grapes and other fruits, I use the lower dish for chocolates when entertaining. This hefty piece is beautifully made and comes apart for storage or travel. The top dish is fashioned to to resemble an octagonal basket and the rim has a pierced gallery. The second tier is where the hallmarks can be found for this highly prized silversmith. This allows us to date it accurately, the letter S for the year 1907 so early Edwardian in era.

An impressive piece, measuring 8" in diameter across the centre dish and standing 12" tall. Excellent condition. Weight: 595 grams. 19.13 ounces.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian sterling silver tableware from 1901 to 1910 is known for delicate proportions, reticulated or pierced lattice work, Neo-Classical Revival influences, and refined chased ornamentation.

These items were wrought from hallmarked sterling silver (.925 purity), often utilizing hand-piercing techniques, cast pedestal bases, and fitted central columns to secure multiple bowls or tiers.

Authentic British pieces feature four or five struck marks: the makers initials, the lion passant for sterling silver, the assay office mark (such as a crown for Sheffield), and the date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

A silver centrepiece can be positioned on a dark polished timber dining table or sideboard, filled with fresh fruit, dry botanicals, or displayed unadorned as a metallic focal point.

Silver should be cleaned gently using a specialized silver polishing cloth or a mild silver foam wash, avoiding abrasive chemicals, and stored in a dry, tarnish-inhibiting cloth wrapper.
