Description

Welsh longcase clock, with a square brass 13-inch dial with cast corner spandrels and primitive engraving of Classical urns, and an eight-day movement by George Jackson of Llanrwst, circa 1780.

George Jackson was probably apprenticed to Watkin Owen of the famous Owen family of clockmakers in Llanrwst. Around 1800, he moved south to Dolgellau where he was recorded in the parish register for 1805. In the previous year, he had taken on Cadwalader Roberts of the town as an apprentice.

The case is of exceptional quality and made from solid yew-wood. It is of the distinctive Llanrwst architectural style, and Jackson obviously patronised the same case-makers as the Owens for his more prestigious pieces.

The hood has a broken-pediment with (replaced) brass finials and a blind-fretwork frieze, over the door which is flanked by finely-turned pillars, above the trunk with a shaped door flanked by half-round reeded columns, over a base with canted corners and a correspondingly-shaped panel, and raised on bracket feet.

Excellent colour and surface patination.

The movement is original and complete but is in need of a service and overhaul.
