Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

This late Victorian bureau bookcase is constructed from walnut in a warm brown tone with a glazed upper section. The piece measures 236 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, extending to 83 cm deep when the writing flap is open. The upper cabinet features a moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves. Below, the fall-front writing flap pulls down to reveal a fitted interior with pigeonholes and small drawers, inset with a purple leather writing surface. The lower cupboard section stands on a plinth base and includes panel doors decorated with carved detailing, alongside visible surface wear requiring restoration. Placed in a study, library, or traditional living space, this substantial item offers display and writing workspace.

A Victorian secretaire bookcase is a hybrid piece of furniture featuring an upper glazed cabinet for book storage above a lower chest or cupboard that houses a fall-front or slide-out writing desk fitted with small drawers and pigeonholes.

Late Victorian examples commonly used solid and veneered walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-blown glass panes, brass hardware, and leather-inset writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces display period construction marks such as asymmetric dovetails, original brass locks, age-related natural oxidisation on the underside and back panels, and Victorian architectural mouldings or relief carvings.

Place the unit against a neutral accent wall in a home office or living room, using the glazed upper section to display modern ceramics alongside books to balance the dark walnut wood.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood warping and veneer drying. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain and dust soft leather surfaces with a dry cloth.
