A high quality C18th Louis XVI cream and gilt decorated longcase clock of stylish form. The foliate carved pediment and trailing swags adorn the shapely case with further foliate carving, on a marbleised plinth base. Interior in dark green.
This clock is testemant to the renowned 18th Century French clock maker, Lepaute.
Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789) and Jean-Baptiste Lepaute (1727-1801) revolutionised French horlogerie.
The pair were clockmakers to Louis XV and eleven more Lepautes continued to make clocks.
Lepaute became a dynasty, with the last clock-maker of that name dying in 1909.
Famously, Napoleon III''s carriage clock by Lepaute was given to Queen Victoria after his death and is now at Frogmore House. Circa 1780
