Welsh 8-day longcase clock with square brass dial with superior engraving and a silvered chapter ring and calendar indicator, and cast rococo corner spandrels, by David Rowland of Aberystwyth, c1780. The movement is original and complete but is need of a service.
The exceptionally fine oak case has a square hood with a bold cornice with broken dentil embellishments above a blind fretwork frieze and turned pillars, over a trunk with Greek-key and fluted decoration above a shaped door flanked by fluted columns over a plain base raised on a (later) plinth. Wonderful colour and surface patination.
There appear to have been two clockmakers in Aberystwyth called David Rowland, probably father and son. One with this name advertised his premises in Pier Street in 1816 and appeared in trade directories of 1822 and 1836.
Illustrated in "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950: A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design", plate 846.
(The slight overlap of the dial by the hood door indicates a possible marriage, but is within the tolerance often found in 18th century Welsh clocks, when the casemaker was often located at a distance from the clockmaker.)
(Replaced hinges, door handle and plinth, small replaced section to the backboards, possibly replaced seat board. Small pieces of moulding and fretwork missing from the hood. Old woodworm in the backboards and a small section of the internal part of the framework)
Height: 79.5 ins; 202 cms
Width: 21 ins; 53 cms
Depth: 11.5 ins; 29 cms
