A Large and Impressive English Wall Clock

19th century
Description

A large and most impressive English 8-day fusee WALL CLOCK, signed Dent, the movement by Thwaites of London. The superb and heavy quality 8-day+ movement is of “A” frame construction, similar to that found in an Act of Parliament clock, whilst the original pendulum features a large heavy bob and steel rod. It is stamped “Thwaites” to the front plate. The dial, partially restored, is 18ins diameter and the hands are of blued steel with a “tail counter-weight” to the minute hand.

The case is predominantly of patinated metal (probably zinc) complete with its original cast brass fixing lugs. This might this clock was possibly for outside use, whereas the wonderful one-piece cast brass bezel (so difficult to cast perfectly in those days) is complex moulded with a deep concave centre section. Perfect working order and guaranteed for at least two years. 20.5ins wide overall. Circa 1830-50

** John Thwaites actually start as a clockmaker in the 17th century and descendants continued until around 1900. Thwaites and Reed was established in 1740 and is sometimes considered to be the oldest clockmaking manufacturer in the world. They specialised in turret and wall clocks and for some 30 years a team of representatives from this firm maintained the “Great Clock” now known by everyone as “Big Ben”.
