Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Anglo-Indian colonial merchant trunk is fashioned from dark brown rosewood and enriched with polished brass hardware. The piece presents a rectangular silhouette incorporating a lift-top lid above a lower section fitted with three long drawers. Brass corner brackets reinforce the outer angles, while flush brass handles, decorative keyhole escutcheons, and a central drop-down plate accent the facade. The structure rests on short, turned bulbous feet at each corner. The trunk measures 75 cm high, 141 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. Such a substantial storage item suits a gentleman's library, hallway, or spacious living room, providing both a tabletop surface and deep interior capacity for blankets, linens, or books in a contemporary home.

FAQs

An Anglo-Indian merchant trunk is a heavy timber storage chest produced in India during the 19th century, designed for traders and officers to store and transport goods and personal effects securely during long voyages.

These trunks were predominantly crafted from durable hardwoods like rosewood or teak, reinforced with hand-cut brass corner brackets, protective straps, heavy-duty hinges, and flush-fitting metal handles.

Authentic period examples exhibit dense solid timber showing rich natural grain, traditional hand-cut joinery, hand-hammered brass fittings with genuine patination, and original turned bun feet integrated into the base.

A substantial brass-bound trunk functions well as a focal coffee table in a living room, a functional storage box at the foot of a bed, or an anchor piece in an entryway.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a clean microfiber cloth and apply high-grade beeswax once a year, avoiding contact between wax and brass fittings to retain the natural aged surface.
