This slender well proportioned mahogany eight-day longcase clock has a particularly attractive painted dial with separate second-hand and calendar subsidiary dials. The maritime theme that runs through the original decoration is an indication of its coastal & naval origins. This is further supported by the maker's name and location painted on the dial: Rider of Southampton. The painted spandrels (corners of the main dial) depict sea shells which were very popular with 19th Century amateur naturalists and collectors.

A very elegant clock and one that will compliment and not dominate its surroundings.

Both movement and case have undergone sensitive restoration.
