Early C20th Painted Trunk

1900 - 1920
Description

An incredible find: a well-used travelling trunk with original old distressed polychrome paintwork. This eye catching metal box, complete with lifting handles to each end and a main handle so it can be carried like a suitcase, retains a wonderful lived-in look with a battered yellow, red, off-white, and sky-blue paint finish. It has a hasp and staple to enable it to be locked with any standard padlock, and it dates from around 1900/1920. Perfect for general purpose storage with an abundance of charm and character.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These utility trunks were fabricated from sheet metal or tinplate, designed to offer lightweight yet durable protection for personal belongings during travel via rail or steamship in the early 1900s.

Most trunks of this era feature pressed tinplate or sheet iron painted with protective enamel finishes, reinforced with wooden or metal ribbing, rolled edges, and heavy iron latches and carry handles.

Authentic examples display genuine wear, oxidisation on unpainted iron fixtures, hand-applied or stencilled paint layers showing age-related distressing, and period-appropriate cast latches rather than modern rivets.

A painted metal trunk can serve as an accent coffee table, a storage chest at the foot of a bed, or a decorative side table to introduce texture and historic character to a room.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could strip original paint, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to bare metal surfaces to prevent further oxidisation.
