Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in Britain during the late seventeenth century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

These timepieces are traditionally constructed using solid timbers and veneers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut over a pine secondary wood, featuring brass dial faces with engraved chapter rings and intricate cast spandrels.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-engraved brass or painted iron dial, the movements hand-cut gear wheels, the patina of the timber case, and matching maker signatures inscribed on the dial face.

Placing a historical tall clock in a minimalist modern space creates a striking focal point, anchoring the room by contrasting warm wood tones and classical mechanical elements with neutral walls and clean architectural lines.

Antique clocks require placement away from direct sunlight and heating vents to prevent timber splitting, and mechanical movements should be professionally serviced every three to five years to ensure proper operation.
