Description

A fine quality mahogany 8 day longcase clock by James Scott of Leith, circa 1790.

The beautifully proportioned mahogany veneered case of typical Edinburgh design with high quality veneers to the trunk door flanked by reeded quarter columns. The canted corner figured base with a raised single moulding and shaped bracket feet. The swan-neck pediment hood with ornate brass paterae and three cast brass finials, beneath boxwood fretted "Edinburgh panels". The glazed hood door flanked by turned and reeded wooden columns terminating with brass capitals, corresponding half turned columns to the rear of the hood with wooden capitals and glazed movement viewing windows.

The original brass lock and brass hinges to the trunk door.

An elegant case in fine original condition with excellent quality veneers of good colour and patination.

The arched painted dial finely executed with bold Arabic numerals and an outer minute track with Arabic numerals to the quarters and snowflake markings.

The dial corners beautifully decorated with brightly coloured roses on a green background surrounded by a raised gesso gold leaf border.

The arch with allegorical Muse and Cornucopia, flanked by painted flowers.

Subsidiary date and seconds zone to the dial centre, signed to the centre Jas Scott Leith.
