A Louis Philippe Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock By Vieyres

A fine Louis Philippe gilt bronze mantel clock with an eight day silk suspension two train movement and outside count wheel, striking the hours and half hours on a bell; the silvered engine turned dial with Roman numerals and a wavy ribbon minute marker around the chapter ring, moon hands and a now vacant cartouche uniting the two winding holes.
 
The movement is stamped ‘Vieyres’ near the top of the backplate for Vieyres et Repignon of Paris, and a Médaille d’Or stamp for 1827 can be found on the lower part of the backplate. Both the movement and the case are stamped ‘718’.
 
At the top of the ornate gilt bronze case sits a vignette of the Princes in the Tower taken from the painting ‘The Children of Edward IV’ by Paul Delaroche (exhibited 1831, now in the Louvre, Paris) and shows the two young princes sitting reading a book with a dog seated at their feet.
 
Vieyres et Repignon were based in Paris but had premises at 129 Regent Street in London. It is possible therefore that th...
