Mid 19th French Chinoiserie Mantel Clock

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century French mantel clock in a red chinoiserie lacquer case. The case surmounted by a gilt bronze basket of fruit over a bell shaped top, with below an arched coving to the hourglass shaped body; the white enamel dial with pierced gilt metal hands and Arabic numerals to the chapter ring and five second intervals behind a gilt bronze door with sunburst surround and convex glass, on four shaped gilt bronze feet. The case in dark red lacquer decorated overall with chinoiserie motifs including figures, pagodas, trees, flowers and foliage with gilt highlights. Behind a French eight day two train movement with outside count wheel striking the hours and half hours on a bell, signed Planchons à Paris. The dial, marked Viger à Paris, has probably been taken from an earlier clock. Condition overall good, with small chips to the enamel around the left hand winding hole, and minor retouching to the gilt highlights on the case. The movement has been fully serviced and is in full working condition, and the clock is supplied with pendulum and key. French, circa 1870
