18th Century Month-going Longcase Clock

Description

A good early 18th century month-going marquetry LONGCASE CLOCK by Windmills of London.

The case is typical of the period, with barley-twist columns and 'blind' fretwork panels tto the square-topped hood; fine marquetry to the long door with lentical and a similarly marquetry inlaid base. The month-going movement strikes hours on a bell with outside countwheel and finned pillars, whilst the dial has subsidiary seconds ; date aperture above "VI"; ringed winding holes and original ornate blued steel hands. Signed: Windmills, London. 76ins (194cms).

***Joseph Windmills and son Thomas of London, were well-known and good makers of clocks. Joseph became Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1702; Thomas in 1719.. .
