Antique Marquetry 3 Train Musical Longcase Clock

19th century
Description

A most attractive mahogany longcase clock with beautiful marquetry decoration. It has a good quality 8 day musical movement that chimes the quarters on a nest of eight bells and the hours on a ninth bell.

The dial is signed for Benjamin Lockwood of Swaffham, Norfolk. He is listed as working there during the last half of the 18th Cent.

The lovely slim case is in nicely figured mahogany with good quality marquetry decoration of birds, fruit, flowers etc. The hood has an inlaid swan neck pediment with brass finial and nice fluted columns with gilt brass Corinthian capitals.

The smart brass dial has a silvered chapter ring, subsidiary seconds dial and gilt brass spandrels. To the arch is a strike / silent selector (working on the hour strike only).

The case is in good condition but does have a small shrinkage crack to the base plus other minor ware consistent with age and use. For some unexplained reason there is veneer joint to the sides and trunk door frame. This is to the veneer only and not through the carcase (see pictures)

The movement is in good working order, keeping good time and chiming as it should.

The maximum dimensions are:

231cm (91") high

50cm (19.5") wide

24cm (9.5") deep

Free local delivery and setup (80mls), national and international delivery arranged at cost.
