An Exceptional 18th Cent Mahogany Moon Dial Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

This is an exceptional longcase with all the features you could want in an 18th Cent clock. A beautifully figured mahogany case, dead beat escapement, moon phase indicator, centre seconds hand and centre date hand.

It is by Joseph Macdonald of Liverpool. He is listed as working there from 1776 to 1821. I would think this clock dates from the early part of this period.

The unusual feature of this clock is the centre sweep seconds hand and associated dead beat escapement. This allows the seconds hand to move smoothly without any recoil. This arrangement is more usually associated with high quality regulator clocks.

The good quality case is veneered in beautifully figured mahogany and has some most attractive original inlaid patria.

The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a very attractive painted dial.

The case is in good original condition. These is some damage to the painted glass panels to the hood but this is not unusual and not particularly noticeable. The movement is also in good condition with all the features working as they should and it is keeping good time.

The maximum dimensions are:

233cm (92") high excluding finials (plus 7cm)

60cm (23.5") wide

26cm (10") deep

Free local delivery and set-up (80mls), national and international delivery arranged at cost
