Gents 1950s Porta Wrist Watch

A gents 1950s Porta wrist watch from Pforzheimer Uhren-Rohwerke GmbH (PUW).

The company was founded in 1932 by several business men including Rudolf Wehner, a man with years of experience in the watch making trade before being taken prisoner in the first World War.

Following the War, Wehner continued in the watch making business but relying on the import of Swiss raw materials. The company continued to expand and eventually was able to import watch movement machinery from Switzerland (albeit indirectly as there was an import ban).

The company was now producing its own movements, with several new calibres introduced.

However in 1945, the factory was bombed. A new factory was set up just outside Pforzheim and in 1948 the Porta factory was established, producing complete watches rather than just movements.

This particular watch has a PUW hand-winding movement (believed to be the calibre 500 which was the first independently produced calibre) which is working nicely.

The watch measures 34.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the handsomely shaped lugs. The case is gold plated and in very nice condition. The case back is stainless steel.

The lens is in good condition.

The two tone dial is in good original condition.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
