18th Cent Faux Tortoise Shell Lacquer Longcase Clock

Description

A lovely "country house" condition longcase clock. The case is painted as faux tortoise shell with fine gilt decoration. It dates from the early 18th Cent and is by Robert Cutbush of Maidstone, Kent. He is listed as working there from 1702 to 1772

The good quality 8 day 5 pillar movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a silvered chapter ring (rubbed) and very smart gilt spandrels. There is also a subsidiary seconds dial and centre date hand. To the arch is the all important strike / silent selector.

The case is in good unrestored condition but as is typical with unrestored lacquer clocks there is some wear and knocks to the case consistent with age and use. It has retained its original double plinth base and lovely all over gilt decoration.

The maximum dimensions are:

235cm (92.5") high

49cm (19") wide

24cm (9.5") deep
