An antique silver doctor’s watch, 1824, James Blacow.

The watch has a fusee (chain driven) movement, with gun barrel pillars and a diamond endstone, which is working nicely. A winding key is included. The movement is signed James Blacow and it is all protected by a fitted cover.

The watch itself measures 54mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both case backs for Chester 1824, with a case maker’s mark for Nathaniel Lee, a silversmith based in Liverpool. The case is in good condition, especially for such an early piece… there is a small indentation to the bezel and a shallow small indentation to the back but nothing serious at all.

The watch glass is in good condition.

The off-white enamel dial has quite a few hairline cracks. At least one of the hands is a later replacement. The subsidiary seconds dial is larger than usual, so that the doctor could time his patient’s pulse. The watch also has the facility to be stopped by the doctor… the front cover is opened and there is a small lever underneath the number 7, this slides to start and stop the movement.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
