18th Cent 3 Train Musical Longcase Clock

Description

An interesting mahogany longcase clock in need of some light restoration. The case is good quality and is basically 18th Century. As is common with most musical 3 train clocks the movement is probably 19th Cent and it chimes the quarters on a nest of 8 bells. The dial is signed by the maker A Buchan of Perth, Scotland.

The case is typical of the mid 18th Cent and is veneered is some nicely figured mahogany laid in a very decorative pattern. The pagoda toped hood has slim columns with Corinthian capitals. At the top is a sun burst panel and a pair of gilt wood finials.

The substantial 3 train movement chimes the quarters on a nest of 8 bells (playing two different tunes) and strikes the hours on a gong. The brass dial has a silvered chapter ring (rubbed), gilt spandrels and a subsidiary seconds dial.

The case needs a little tidying; there are some small pieces of cross banding missing from the base. The movement works with pressure on the wheels and the chiming and striking mechanism appear to be working ok. It has its weights, bells, gong and pulleys but is missing its pendulum.

The maximum dimensions are:

52cm (20.5“) wide

234cm (92“) high

27cm (10.5“) deep
