Antique Waltham Crescent St Railroad Pocket Watch

An antique Waltham Crescent St railroad pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement, Crescent Street grade, model 1892, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and the serial number dates it back to 1902.

The railroad watch came about after a terrible train crash in Ohio in 1891 brought about a standardisation of railroad timekeeping that stimulated watch design, with the aim of improved accuracy and… Waltham’s advertising tag line was, “Where accuracy and precision are essential, Waltham watches are chosen”. This particular model, the 1892 actually came on the market in 1892.

The Crescent Street was marketed by Waltham as being one of their “best watches for railroad men”.

The 21-jewel movement is superb quality boasting a patent micrometic regulator, gold settings, the balance in a recess, adjusted to temperature, isochronism and five positions, tempered steel safety barrel, patent Breguet hairspring and double roller escapement. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch itself measures 54mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold filled and was made by the Keystone Watch Case Company… it is in good condition with just a little unevenness to the case back.

The watch glass is in good order.

The watch has a signed enamel double sunk dial which looks good to the naked eye. Through a jeweller’s loupe, there are a few hairlines to the chapter ring. The blued steel hands are initially lever set.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
