18th Cent Mahogany 3 Train Musical Longcase Clock

Description

Here we have an interesting mahogany longcase clock. The case is very good quality and is basically 18th Century. As is common with most musical 3 train clocks the movement is probably 19th Cent. Not only does this one chime the quarters on 8 dells it also has a moon dial showing the phase of the moon.

The case is typical of the mid 18th Cent. It has a paneled base standing on bracket feet. The slim trunk has reeded canted corners and a long door with a moulded edge. The pagoda toped hood has slim columns with brass inlaid stop flutes. At the top and sides are intricate fretted panels and at the top of the hood are a pair of cast brass finials.

The substantial 3 train movement chimes the quarters on a nest of 8 bells and strikes the hours on a gong. The brass dial has a silvered chapter ring, gilt spandrels and a subsidiary seconds dial. To the arch is a disc displaying the phases of the moon.

The case is in excellent condition having recently been sympathetically restored. There is however a warp to the trunk door but as this is at the bottom it is not too noticeable. The movement is in good working order with all functions operating as they should.

The maximum dimensions are:

51cm (20“) wide

222cm (87“) high

24cm (9.5“) deep
