WelshAntiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.
According to a trade directory of 1887, he was probably joined by his son; they were recorded as "William and Edward (or Edwin) Hopkin, 24 & 41 Rhosmaen Street", and by this date were retailers and repairers of clocks.
The case is in Welsh oak which has faded or bleached to a pale, almost yew-wood, appearance. It is very elaborate, the hood having a swan-neck pediment with rosettes and a central Prince of Wales' feathers above the door which is flanked by barley-sugar pillars; the trunk has a cross-banded door with carved rosettes above and below and flanked by barley-sugar columns; over a base with an inlaid motif also flanked by similar columns, with the whole raised on ogee feet.
The case maker was almost certainly William Thomas, who ran the Dulais Cabinet Works in nearby Llanwrda. (For a similar example, see "Welsh Furniture 1250 - 1950", plate 1265).
