Antique Silver Fusee Pocket Watch, Webb, Cardigan

An antique silver fusee pocket watch by A M Webb of Cardigan.

The watch has a fusee movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed A M Webb, Cardigan and it is protected by an inner fitted cover. Two keys are included.

Alfred Webb, a watch maker and jeweller born in Newcastle Emlyn, moved his business to 5 Pendre in Cardigan in 1875 where there was a shop and two cottages. All of the Webb family were Welsh speaking. They continued to trade from these premises until Alfred died in 1915 and then his son Joshua took over the business and traded as Alfred M Webb & Sons. The business closed in August 1927.

This particular watch measures 52mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Chester 1886 with a case maker’s mark for the silversmith Frank Willday of Coventry. The case is in lovely condition with just rubbing to the engine turned detail on the back of the case.

The watch glass has minor marks but is very acceptable.

The signed dial is in lovely condition.
