Antique G M Wheeler Grade Pocket Watch from Elgin

19th century
Description

An antique G M Wheeler grade pocket watch from Elgin.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working well. The movement is signed G M Wheeler… certain Elgin grade numbers were also given names as a way of marketing the watches to their target audience and the G M Wheeler grade was used by Elgin for their ‘gentleman’s watch’. The serial number on the movement dates the watch back to around 1880. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch itself measures 56mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop so slightly larger than the standard 50mm size. The case is stamped Dueber Coin. The Dueber Watch Case Manufacturing Co started trading in Cincinnati, OH in the 1860s. American coin silver such as this is 900 fine silver so a little less pure than standard sterling which is 925. The case has a little unevenness to the back but overall is very acceptable for a piece of its age.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The signed dial has a few very faint hairline cracks, difficult to see even with a magnifying loupe. Blued steel lever set hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

Declaration
