Silver Drinkwater Coventry Fusee Pocket Watch 1897

19th century
Description

An antique silver fusee pocket watch by Drinkwater of Coventry, 1897.

As well as being a watchmaker, A H Drinkwater was a well respected member of the community becoming both an Alderman and also Chairman of the Waterworks and Fire Brigade Committee. He also had a shopping arcade named in his

Honour but it was destroyed in the Coventry Blitz. Drinkwater was also a great benefactor to the city and local charities, being on the board of Guardians he chose to help many local people who found themselves in poverty.

This particular watch has a fusee (chain driven) movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed A H Drinkwater, Coventry and it is protected by an inner fitted dust cover. A winding key is included.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is hallmarked for Chester 1897. The case is in lovely condition with just a little rubbing to the edge of the engine turned detail on the case back.

The watch glass has some fairly light marks.

The enamel dial has a sunken centre, and sunken subsidiary seconds dial… it is all in lovely condition. The minute hand has lost its tip.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
