Superb 18th C Carved Oak 8 Day Longcase Clock

Description

Here we have a superb 18th Cent Oak longcase clock with a very attractive 8 day brass dial movement. The dial is signed by the maker Wilks of Wolverton (Warks). This could be either Richard or John Wilkes who both worked in Wolverton in the late 18th Cent when this clock was made.

The case has beautiful slim proportions and some very well executed carving. The carving was probably done in the 19th Cent but was done by a very accomplished carver. It has a particularly attractive hood with barley twist columns with gilt capitals and a decorative fretwork crest to the top.

The brass dial has a silvered chapter ring (silvering rubbed), gilt spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture. At a glance I would have said the movement belongs to the dial but unusually for a longcase clock the movement is signed Cavit, Bedfordshire. There are no spare holes in the front plate and it all fits together well but I can only assume that the dial and movement did not start of life together.

The case is in good un-restored condition and a nice mellow colour. The movement is in good working order and is complete with pendulum, weights, bell and a winding key.

The maximum dimensions are:

48cm (19“) wide (top of hood)

216cm (85“) high

28cm (10.5“) deep
