The Wittnauer brand was formally established in 1885 when it was a small family concern. Wittnauer movements were generally made for them by various Swiss firms including Revue Thommen, and subsequently finished and cased in the US

The company began to grow rapidly as it aimed to cater for the ever growing world of scientific and private exploration. During the First World War Wittnauer produced instruments and watches for the early aviation units with the most famous model being the Wittnauer All Proof which was also used by daredevil Jimmie Mattern in his attempt to fly around the world.

In 1950 the Swiss company Longines bought Wittnauer and they marketed some very similar lines of watches under both brand names. This particular watch would have been manufactured in this transitional period.

The watch has a hand-winding movement, Revue 73, which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Wittnauer name.

The watch itself measures 21.5mm wide excluding the winding crown and 30mm high excluding the shapely lugs... it is quite small so would suit a slimmer wrist. The case is gold plated and there is some rubbing in parts but the base metal is a very similar colour so it does not show too much to the naked eye.

The curved lens has light scratches but is very acceptable.

The Longines signed dial has mellowed in colour with age, and there is a light area of marking right at the top edge of the dial.

A new brown leather strap has been fitted.
