Worboys Antiques has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
The brass dial has a signed name plate within the arch, an engraved and silvered chapter ring, brass spandrels and a date aperture within a matted centre. The 8 day fusee movement has an anchor escapement. The maker Gabriel Smith of Chester is listed as working 1752-1797.
Current Condition
This is an original clock. The case has been revived and the silk replaced. In 19th century it was fashionable to convert the original verge escapement into an anchor which gave better timekeeping and reliability and in the process remove the pull quarter repeat, as is the case with this clock. The rear door has also been moved backwards slightly to accommodate the conversion. The movement has been serviced in our own workshops and is guaranteed for 12 months.
